Here is a selection of commands I find useful when using a Windows system.

To know what machine you're connected on:

hostname

To check the connectivity towards a machine, allows to detect missing routes, and other bumps in the road, such as turned off devices.

ping HOSTNAME

To check the connectivity to a port and the possibility to connect to a host:

Test-Connection HOSTNAME -port PORT
# or
Invoke-WebRequest -UseBasicParsing HOSTNAME:PORT

To get the date

date

To start powershell from cmd

powershell
# use exit or CTRL-D to exit

To list running processes

Get-Process

To list directories and search for something

dir
dir /s filename_to_match

To view a file's content

more filename.txt

To find content in a file bashstyle

Get-Content filename.txt | finstr SEARCHPATTERN
